WHAT IS AN MFT?

"Marriage and Family Therapists (MFTs) are licensed mental health professionals who work with individuals; couples – whether or not married; family’s of all types; and groups to cure or relieve mental, emotional, and relational concerns of all kinds. MFTs work in a variety of settings throughout California and the rest of the country providing mental health services, as well as provide services in independent practice. MFTs have minimally acquired two-year master’s degrees, 3,000 hours of supervised experience, and have passed two rigorous exams."

HOW DO I KNOW THERAPY IS RIGHT FOR ME?

This is a decision that only you can make. Sometimes people feel like they're doing okay handling things on their own. Other times people might feel like things are a little overwhelming on their own and need some extra support. Often times we seek out family and friends for this support. Therapy can be helpful if you'd like a little more of an unbiased opinion, if you don't feel like you're getting the support you need from friends and family, or if you're feeling stuck. If you've felt like things aren't changing for the better, and nothing you try is helping, it may be a good time to try seeing a therapist. You can always call me if you are unsure, and we can explore if therapy may be a good thing to start.

HOW LONG DOES THERAPY TAKE?

A typical therapy hour for an individual is 50 minutes long. Many times family and couple sessions can be scheduled for 75 or 90 minutes to give everyone enough time to talk. Group sessions are 75 minutes long. The initial session can be 50 minutes long, but I recommend 75 minutes since there will be a lot of information to go over in the very beginning.

Sessions take place on a weekly basis, however, due to the varying nature of everyone's specific needs, frequency can be different for each person.

Therapy is encouraged to continue until you feel better and your goals are met. There isn't a specific time frame for when it will be completed. It really depends on each person.

WHAT DOES THE FIRST SESSION LOOK LIKE?

The first part of therapy is where we get to know one another and decide if my style is a good fit for you. During this time, I will ask you what made you decide to begin therapy, and we will discuss what your goals may be. I will also go over my office policies and answer questions you may have regarding treatment. This is a good opportunity for you to ask about my experience and approach as well.

HOW ARE PAYMENTS MADE? HOW MUCH DO YOU CHARGE?

Please look at my services and bookings page for more details on this topic. I accept cash, check or credit card. Payment is due at the start of each session. I do require a credit card on file. Please note that I do have a 24 hour cancellation policy. If you cancel outside of the 24 hour window, you will be charged the full fee. Please note that my associate is at a lower rate than mine. Please inquire for details. 

DO YOU ACCEPT INSURANCE?

I do not accept insurance, but I can provide you with a summary bill at the end of the month. You can submit this to your insurance company for reimbursement. Please inquire if my services will be covered with your insurance provider before meeting with me to confirm that you will be reimbursed, as some insurance companies may not reimburse the full fee.

DO YOU OFFER SLIDING SCALE RATES?

I do have a limited number of slots at a reduced fee, based on financial need. If this is something you are interested in, please inquire for more information.

WHAT IS CONFIDENTIALITY?

By law, you have the right to client-therapist confidentiality. That means that what you say to me stays between us - unless there is a safety concern. For example, if you tell me that you are going to hurt or kill yourself, or someone else, I will have to notify a third party for help. There are more exceptions to confidentiality, and we can review them during your first visit.

IS YOUR OFFICE ACCESSIBLE?

Unfortunately, the building I am in is very old so there are stairs and no ramps. I can offer telehealth, or we can get creative if you want to meet in person. I apologize for this challenge. If you are needing to find a therapist who is more accessible in person, please do not hesitate to reach out, and I can give you a few referrals. 

WHAT IS THE GOOD FAITH ESTIMATE?

As of January 1, 2022, You have the right to receive a "Good Faith Estimate" explaining how much your medical/mental health care will cost. 

 

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don't have insurance, or who are not using insurance, an estimate of the expected charges for medical services, including psychotherapy services. 

 

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non emergency healthcare services, including psychotherapy services.   

 

You can ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule a service. 

 

If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy of your Good Faith Estimate.
