Stuck in the Suck
Often times things happen in life that we have no control over. Unfortunately, if similar things continue to happen over and over, it starts to feel like you're stuck in the suck. This isn't anything you're doing wrong, so much as our brains are often attracted to what we know how to do. So you're going to naturally gravitate towards situations that feel familiar. Hence - repeating patterns. People usually either feel helpless and accept defeat becoming extremely sad, or they become motivated to change and try harder. While becoming motivated is awesome and can spark change, it can sometimes feel like you just don't have the energy anymore when nothing changes. In these circumstances, Patrick McGrath says "Don't Try Harder, Try Different". What I love about this quote is you not only are not required to put more energy into something, the change could be motivating enough to get you out of the suck and feel less helpless. It's similar to Einstein's quote, “Insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” In this way, you can get creative, think outside the box, and try something you haven't tried before. Get curious. Try to understand why it keeps happening. With understanding, change becomes easier, and getting out of the suck becomes more doable. Remember though, it isn't about avoiding the suck or making the goal be to never be in the suck. Life happens and there will always be moments that are hard. It's more about recognizing in the moment that it is hard, giving yourself permission to have that moment and those feelings, and then do something to get yourself out of that place of suck. This is where you try something different. If you're having trouble figuring out what your different could be, reach out and set up a session. I can help you figure it out!
